Why do we have to go to school?

strategies to ease the return for yourselves and your little ones

Tips on Responding to Poetry:
Read (or listen to the audio link below) and allow the words to simply sit with you and sink in.
Maybe choose your favourite line or a few words that resonate.
Set a timer for 5 minutes, pick up a notebook and write anything that comes to mind.

Why do we have to go to school?

‘Why do I have to go to school?’ the little boy cries.
And as his mother wrestles him into his uniform, she too wonders why.

‘Because the government say so.
If you don’t go, I’ll get a fine.
Because other parents will judge
if again we’re not on time.
Because I’ve got my own work to go to,
And I can’t afford childcare.
Because you’ll miss out on the free lunch
if today you’re not there.
Because you go to school for your future
qualifications that one day you’ll need.
Because it will help you get a job,
when you’ve got your own mouths to feed.
Because these are the best days of your life.
It only gets harder as you grow.’

Yet the words all felt hollow.
They weren’t the reasons her young child should know.

You should go to primary school because you want to, because it’s exciting, interesting, fun.
You should go for your own wellbeing, to play outside, laugh and run.
You should go to see friends, learn how to be a good person and with others get along.
You should go to experience all the different arts: crafting, drama, painting and song.
Skills in speaking, reading and writing must all also be earned,
so you can communicate with others and make your ideas heard.
Learn about money and maths so you’re not ripped off in life.
But also patience and compromise, understanding for a future partner, husband or wife.

‘Why do they have to go to school?’ so many of us cry.
Let’s fight for an education system that gives the right reply.
